On a cold Harare night, I made my way to the Borrowdale Race Course in my uncle's unreliable 323. No I had not turned to eating horse meat to sustain my hungry self – though stallion steak does sound like a good idea. Britain seemed to love its horse meat mince pies.
I was on my way there to sneak into The Miller SoundClash Harare party. The event was to showcase the Zimbabwean winner of The Miller Soundclash who happened to be RayDizz . He had beat out the competition from all over Zimbabwe and South Africa in 3 gruelling heats of DJ battles.
The event also featured performances from Miller South Africa spokesmen, DJ Euphonik, DJ Fresh, Khuli Chana and was hosted by DJ SPHEctacula & Naves . The venue for this event was the Glass House - an upmarket spot that is modelled like a ..... well Glass House. The place had been decked out with an elaborate set of lights, lasers, rigs and Miller branded items. It all looked very fancy shmancy and I spent most of the night trying to see if I could ever afford any of the equipment used.
After sneaking my way past the bouncers I found myself on the dance floor as the venue filled up. First up was the Miller SoundClash champ RayDizz who dropped an impressive and engaging set that got the night started He incorporated local and international Dancehall as well as Hip Hop and Dance music. Somehow amidst all the excitement I managed to sneak myself on stage SPHE & Naves then took over with a seriously high energy performance.
The dynamic duo were then followed by DJ Euphonik and DJ Fresh who both opted for a deep house set. The night was closed out by the Motswako Originator Khuli Chana who delivered an insane high energy performance. I was shocked that the crows responded so well to his set. Even when he performed album tracks that casual fans might not recognize.
All in all It was a great event. For the amount of money spent on production I felt they could have invited a few more people. Not too many people even knew that the event was happening . It was still a memorable night and RayDizz did Zimbabwe proud. He shall be setting off to perform in Las Vegas on August 20th
Early drop to make up for the missed week! The Twimbos are back with a fresh new episode, featuring frontline accounts from Nitefreak at Hinde, in-depth reports from Kigali, expert analysis of Sakhile Dube and Chidimma Adetshina's performances at Miss Universe, and shrewd diplomacy in their takes on the South African Mining standoff and El Salvador's gang prison. Enjoy!
