When A Buffalo Runs Into A Burning Boy

Things are getting pretty heated in the world of African Dancehall. Well relatively speaking of course. The heat was turned up a great deal this past week when Zimbabwean Dancehall star and close personal friend (I swear he is) Buffalo SoulJah released his charged diss track BomboBoy directed at none other than Burna Boy. In the song Buff (pronounced Boof) pulls no punches on the Nigerian artist. You can watch the lyric video below. I found it very helpful as my several attempts to decipher the lyrics using my hearing alone proved extremely unsuccessful.

Now how did we get here? Why are these guys beefing? The rift seems to have started last year at Da L.E.S annual All White Party. Burna felt that Buffalo had been talking about him behind his back and allegedly confronted Buff with goons and suvker punches, obviously Buff for his part didn't take kindly to that and retaliated with what he says were “50 goons” who arrived at Da L.E.S home. The fracas continued later that night at Taboo Nightclub in Sandton. This video covers the issue quite well. We also discussed the incident with Buff during our interview here.

Things seem to have died down for the two artists until a few months ago when Burna released his song Acting Bad. In the song he raps

“big up me friend Dem something something from Angola something something fi shoot up a Buffalo SoulJah”

The lyrics of that song seemed to go unnoticed by Buff up until Burna recited them again while he was on Tim Westwood’s Crib Sessions. The increased exposure of that video seems to have jolted Buff into action where he released BomboBoy. On the song Buff speaks on the beef and says that both L.E.S and AKA (members of the A Team) have distanced themselves from the beef. Buff also claims that the Angolan that Burna references in Acting Bad could be in fact be a double agent that is feeding information to Buffalo about Burna’s whereabouts. It’s all very spicy.

Considering that Burna just returned to the UK after a long hiatus from the country that may have been the result of legal issues, I hope this doesn't extend beyond the music. But if they must fight. I hope that they do it in Sumo suits
